Valenzuela Klenner Galería, presents Nama Bu ("we exist" in the Embera dialect) a solo exhibition by artist Karen Paulina Biswell, a continuation of dialogues she began with the Embera-Chamis community in 2012.

The exhibition Nama Bu, is part of a personal exploration that Karen Paulina carries out through a series of photographs, in which she inquires about the formulation of the individual and collective identity of a community marked by events of Colombia’s recent history. The show consists of a series of three sets, whose connecting thread could be an intent to translate an oneiric, enigmatic and mysterious relationship with this community.

In the first set "Hotel Dorantes", a Republican building of the “golden” age, becomes an ideal scenery for the construction of a series of imposing and phantasmagoric portraits, with clear reference to the painting tradition of subject sublimation, exaltation of  human qualities and of a clearly manifestation of their social status for posterity.

In the second set, "Monte Adentro" (“Mountain Deep”), the artist invites us to slow our tempo, assume a contemplation mood in order to perceive and interiorize the mystery inherent in the abstract geometry, density and complexity of the primal shapes found in nature; an element of their reflections and source of the community´s becoming.

The third set, "Luz de Luna” (“Moonlight"), shows an accomplice game between the artist and the protagonists, engaging in a singular experience of creation of images and meaning. From “discovering” and  inquiring about certain aspects of their cosmovision, and intermingled with contemporary art practices, Biswell invites them to participate not only as subjects, but as authors and actors at the same time.

By not privileging the “document-image”, the exhibition invites us to think about photography as a process, slow in execution and free in its expressiveness and interpretation, enabling thus, an open and poetic gaze on a subject that does not fit within the logics of traditional representation.

The exhibition will be open from Thursday, November 19, to January 25, 2016, in the first and second floors of the gallery.
